Kayla Itsines lifted the lid on a common workout mistake on Instagram.
In a message to her 12.5 million followers, the fitness trainer revealed that many forget to warm up before exercising.
While this may not seem like a big deal, it can affect performance and cause injury.
On Instagram, the influencer wrote: “Warm up reminder!
“I feel that women need to understand WHY it is important to warm up and how to know when your body is actually ‘warm’.
“Warming up correctly can reduce your risk of injury. I would much rather prehab a movement than rehab an injury.”
Kayla recommends doing around 15 minutes of movement for warming up.
She usually incorporates both cardio and stretching on her clients.
The fitness buff added: “So how can you tell if you are ‘warm’?
“Check for an increase in your heart rate. You will also feel more mobile. Your body may feel warm to touch AND you should also feel ‘ready to workout’.
“The way that I choose to warm up (and what I tell my clients to do) is a combination of CARDIO and MOVEMENT.
“This would look like a treadmill walk for 5-10 minutes followed by dynamic stretching.”
Alongside her important message, Kayla shared an easy warm up routine.
In the clip, she used a foam roller to work her traps, glutes, hamstrings and calves.
She also grabs resistance bands to do leg raises and shoulder rotations.
Thoracic rotations and leg swings are also good for getting the body ready to exercise.
So make sure you don’t skip this step next time you’re working out!
